Cybersecurity Threats in Media: Unexpected Vulnerabilities and Best Practices

In an increasingly connected world, cybersecurity threats can emerge from the most unexpected sources. Media professionals must remain vigilant about protecting your networks, devices, and valuable data. A recent incident involving an HVAC system installation highlights the importance of comprehensive cybersecurity measures.

The Unexpected Threat: Internet-Connected HVAC Systems

One of our clients was getting a routine upgrade, but this revealed an often-overlooked cybersecurity vulnerability. The client, unaware of the potential risks, was in the process of installing a new HVAC system with internet connectivity. This modern feature allowed for remote configuration and monitoring, including temperature adjustments and filter life tracking. While the convenience of managing office temperature from anywhere seemed appealing, it presented a significant security concern that the client hadn't considered.

The HVAC installation team proposed connecting the new system directly to the client's main network. However, this approach would have exposed all of the organization's computers to potential cyber attacks through the HVAC system. Recognizing this risk, we collaborated with the installers and the HVAC manufacturer to develop a solution. They ultimately implemented a dedicated cloud-based system for the HVAC unit, effectively isolating it from the client's primary network. This approach maintained the benefits of remote access while significantly reducing the potential for security breaches. The case highlights the importance of scrutinizing all internet-connected devices in a business environment, even those that may seem unrelated to core operations or data security.

Media Industry: A Prime Target for Cyber Attacks

According to a 2022 Sophos report, the media industry faces a higher rate of ransomware attacks than any other sector. A staggering 79% of surveyed media staff reported experiencing such attacks. Hackers are particularly drawn to media companies due to their influence and audience reach, often aiming to damage the reputation of publications.

Key Cybersecurity Advice for Media Organizations:

  1. Implement network segmentation:  Create separate networks for devices not essential to your main operations, including guest Wi-Fi access.
  2. Assess all internet-connected devices:  Even seemingly harmless devices like HVAC systems can pose significant risks if not properly secured.
  3. Work with vendors and manufacturers:  Collaborate to identify and address potential vulnerabilities in any new equipment or systems being installed.
  4. Consider cloud-based solutions:  In some cases, cloud-based systems can offer more secure alternatives to directly connecting devices to your main network.

The HVAC system case study demonstrates how a potential threat was successfully mitigated. By working closely with installers and manufacturers, a secure cloud-based solution was implemented, protecting the client's network from exposure to cyber threats.

As media professionals, staying informed about cybersecurity best practices is crucial. By remaining vigilant and proactive, we can better protect our organizations, our data, and ultimately, your audiences.
